The Stalag Luft prisoner camp was held in easteran Germany that housed captured airforce servicemen. The site, difficult to escape from even by creating tunnels, was run as a luftwaffe prisoner of war camp. Despite being an officer only camp, expansions later made it available to non-commission officers. The first compound of the camp was created on March 21, 1942 and it began to hold their first prisoners, British RAF and Fleet Air Arm officers, at Stalag Luft 3. The prison camp was built to be extremely difficult to escape from because of a few different reasons. For one, the digging of escape tunnels was nearly impossible because the housing for prisoners were raised several inches off of the ground so that the guards could detect digging.
